Raise the Stakes
My name is Emily and the Raise the Stakes Campaign project is for my Girl
Scout Gold Award.  Even though this is a Girl Scout project, I was inspired
to do it through one of my clubs at school,
School Girls Unite.
Through this club, I was given the chance to lobby both Senators from my
state of Maryland, Senators Cardin and Mikulski.  When we met with their
staffers, we were given the chance to talk about the issues we thought
were important and how the United States should be giving much more
than what we are giving now.  At the end, we asked them what we could
do to help.  Both staffers' responses were to raise awareness.

It's hard for Senators to support something that does not have the
backing of America and with most people unaware about how little goes to
foreign aid, it keeps on ending back on the chopping block when economic
times get rough.  That really hit a chord with me and I decided to make
that the focus of my Gold Award and to create this campaign, because
people need to know the truth about how little goes to foreign aid.

Now is your opportunity to get involved, read a little more about the
issue, write a letter to your senator or representative and help raise
awareness so together we can raise the stakes for foreign aid.
